Intent
The core language taught at Claverley Primary School is French. At Claverley, we use Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work which is a comprehensive and well-sequenced MFL curriculum following the National Curriculum and forms part of our whole school broad and balanced curriculum.
In Key Stage 2 it is the intention that children will access first quality teaching of French by their class teacher, providing them with the foundation for learning further languages.
We aim to provide all children with the skills, knowledge and understanding to learn a new language enabling them to develop their oracy and literacy skills and their ability to communicate for practical purposes.
Our language teaching will provide the rich experiences and opportunities for the children of Claverley Primary to understand their own culture/s and those of others, celebrating ideas about individual identity and community and deepening their understanding of the world around them. We hope that learning another language will do a great deal to shape the children’s ideas about language learning, as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language, and a better knowledge and understanding of the cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussions and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
- Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt.
- Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
At Claverley, it is our intent that children in Lower KS2 will acquire basic skills and understanding of French with a strong emphasis placed on developing their speaking and listening skills. These will be embedded and further developed in Upper KS2, with emphasis on reading and writing. Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work supports children to meet the National Curriculum end of KS2 attainment targets. When children leave Claverley, it is intended that they will have a love of language learning, natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages.
Implementation
Children are taught to:
- Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
- Explore the patterns and sounds of French through songs and rhymes.
- Engage in conversations: ask and answer questions.
- Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary and basic French French language structures.
- Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation.
- Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French.
- Write phrases from memory and adapt to create new sentences.
- Understand basic French grammar.
French lessons are taught weekly in KS2 by the class teacher. Children demonstrate their learning through speaking and listening, participation in games and songs and recording in their French books. Immediate feedback is given through picking up pronunciation and supporting children to embed correct ways.
Kapow Primary’s National curriculum mapping shows which of our units cover each of the National curriculum attainment targets as well as each of the strands.
The Progression of skills and knowledge shows the skills and knowledge that are
taught within each year group and how these skills develop to ensure that
attainment targets are securely met by the end of Key Stage 2.
Through Kapow Primary’s French scheme, pupils are given opportunities to
communicate for practical purposes around familiar subjects and routines. The
scheme provides balanced opportunities for communication in both spoken and
written French, although in Year 3 the focus is on developing oral skills, before
incorporating written French in Year 4 and beyond.
The Kapow Primary scheme is a spiral curriculum, with key skills and vocabulary
revisited repeatedly with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build on
their previous learning.
Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired
and group work including role-play, language games and language detective work.
Differentiated guidance is available for every lesson to ensure that lessons can be accessed and enjoyed by all. In order to help pupils, retain their French learning, we incorporate French into the classroom environment throughout the week.
Each unit of lessons includes multiple teacher videos to help develop subject knowledge and support ongoing CPD.
Impact
The impact of Kapow Primary’s scheme can be monitored continuously through
both formative and summative assessment. Each lesson includes guidance to support
teachers in assessing pupils against the learning objectives.
After the implementation of Kapow Primary French, pupils should leave school
equipped with a range of language-learning skills to enable them to study French, or
any other language, with confidence at Key Stage 3.
The expected impact of following the Kapow Primary French scheme of work is that
children will:
Be able to engage in purposeful dialogue in practical situations (e.g., ordering in
a cafe, following directions) and express an opinion.
Make increasingly accurate attempts to read unfamiliar words, phrases, and
short texts.
Speak and read aloud with confidence and accuracy in pronunciation.
Demonstrate understanding of spoken language by listening and responding
appropriately.
Use a bilingual dictionary to support their language learning.
Be able to identify word classes in a sentence and apply grammatical rules they
have learnt.
Have developed an awareness of cognates and near-cognates and be able to
use them to tackle unfamiliar words in French, English, and other languages.
Be able to construct short texts on familiar topics.
Meet the end of Key Stage 2 stage expectations outlined in the national
curriculum for Languages.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through a number of methods, including:
- Observing children speaking and listening in another language.
- Using end of unit quizzes
- Marking of written work.
- Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum to parents.
- Learning walks and pupil voice.
