Intent
At Claverley, we have a broad and balanced curriculum which provides children with many different opportunities to be creative. The Art and Design Curriculum is fully inclusive to every child regardless of their learning needs. Each child has a chance to experiment, invent and create their own works of art by using their imagination and individual interests, thoughts and ideas. This is seen by using many different skills including 3D work, painting, drawing and textiles, which are shown on displays and in
both individual and whole class sketchbooks throughout school.
Art, craft and design should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Implementation
The skills and knowledge are mapped out across each year group and key stage by using medium term plans to ensure progression. This allows for a child throughout their time at Claverley to use a range of different media as well as being able to study and work in the style of various artists. Our topics also ensure for a great deal of inspiration which ensures children become excited to produce artwork.
At Claverley we have developed a comprehensive and well-sequenced Art and Design curriculum following the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and based upon the Kapow Primary scheme which forms part of our whole school broad and balanced curriculum.
Pupils in EYFS are given many opportunities to be creative in expressive arts and design activities within the statutory Early Years curriculum. They are encouraged to be imaginative and artistic in which their pieces of work will be shown in books and on display for them to view their own artwork.
Pupils in Key Stage 1 begin to study different artists and are encouraged to show more detail in their pieces of work. They are taught to focus on techniques in their artwork, including texture, form and shape to ensure for more accurate drawings and paintings.
Pupils in Key Stage 2 are learning to become ‘Masters of Art and Design’ by practising their skills over a longer period of time. This is demonstrated in their sketchbooks which they use to apply skills taught, as well as researching artists and evaluating their own work.
Impact
The creative and exciting approach to Art and Design at Claverley encourages children to use their imagination and individual skills to produce inspiring pieces of art. This is celebrated throughout school from displays to awards in assembly which assists children in developing confidence in this area of the curriculum. Impact in Art and Design is measured using sketch books predominantly but is also seen and celebrated through the use of displays.
