On-line safety

Throughout the school year, we teach the children about keeping themselves safe online. However, technology is not just part of school life. The on-line world we all inhabit is one which changes constantly. As parents, we know how often our children change the apps, games and vocabulary they use. The websites and resources below are designed to help us as parents and teachers keep up-to-date and keep our young people safe.

We have resource links available on our School website but I have included some important links here as well.

Spellings w/c 6/9/22

This week the children have been given a selection of words from the year 3/4 statutory spellings list to revise. They are words which are commonly mis-spelt by many children (and adults).

Spellings will normally be given to Blue Class on Mondays and tested the following Monday. To encourage the children to retain their learning, a few words from previous weeks will be included in the tests.

Spellings

This year we will continue to hand out spellings from the No Nonsense spelling scheme which will be tested weekly. Since it is a while since we launched this programme, I would like to emphasise that the goal is long term retention of spelling ability. The programme uses a combination of spelling patterns which are built up and revised, together with rehearsal and retrieval opportunities for the children. We encourage the children  to think about the way they learn best. Most children do not retain the spellings to use in their own writing unless they are keep practising and retrieving them from their memories. If your child seems to find this skill easy, they can challenge themselves to find other words which use the same pattern or to find exceptions to the rule.

Arthog

We are now only a few weeks away from our Year 6 trip to Arthog. I know the children are looking forward to it. This year, it will be Mrs Colin-Stokes and me who will be accompanying the children. We are very much looking forward to it too.

A letter has been sent home today with a Consent_Form and a Kit_List.

Please not feel you need to buy lots of expensive things to take. Lots of old and/or cheap joggers, leggings, t-shirts socks etc are best as things get wet as even the best waterproofs do not stop you getting wet when you go into the water! The most important thing is that they have dry clothes that they can layer. The waterproofs, walking boots and rucksack that Arthog provide are good quality and keep us dry in even heavy rain.

Please sign and return the Consent_Form to school by Wednesday 14th September.  We need to collate the information and forward it to Arthog Outdoor Education Centre.

We will be having a parent meeting on Tuesday 20th September at 3:20pm when there will be opportunities to ask questions.

In the meantime, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sound System

We are currently hoping to update the sound system in the school hall. However, this will not be until after the Year 5/6 play has been performed. Does anybody have a CD deck which would plug into the existing system and which we could borrow?

Request for Costumes

Does anybody have a velvet cloak or crown in their family dressing up box?

For our Year 5/6 Summer production this year, we have a number of Scottish Lords and a few kings in the cast and would appreciate it if we could borrow some cloaks and crowns. I have found one in my cupboard from when my own children were small and we have two in school, but more would be wonderful.

We know budgets are tight at the moment plus it is better for the environment to recycle, so we would like to see what is already available rather than buy new ones.

If you label them, we will return them after the performances on 19th July.

Thank you for your support.

Year 5/6 Science – Changes as humans develop

Having studied life cycles of plants and animals in science, Year 5 and 6 are now moving on the the connected Year 5/6  topic of  Animals, including humans
The National Curriculum says that pupils should be taught to:

  • describe the changes as humans develop to old age

Notes and guidance (non-statutory)

  • Pupils should draw a timeline to indicate stages in the growth and development of humans. They should learn about the changes experienced in puberty.
  • Pupils could work scientifically by researching the gestation periods of other animals and comparing them with humans; by finding out and recording the length and mass of a baby as it grows.

This is not part of the RSE curriculum which we will cover before the end of the summer. A separate letter will be sent before the RSE curriculum is taught.

We will refer and make links to the previous topic (Living things and their habitats in which pupils should be taught to:

  • describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird
  • describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Science Year 5 and 6

This half term we have been learning about and comparing the life cycles of flowering and non flowering plants, birds, insects, reptiles and amphibians.

As part of this, We have dissected flowers, taken cuttings and collected spider plants “babies” from runners and planted them on. The children have been very enthusiastic!

Many of the children have been keen to tell us about the eggs which they hope will hatch at home; the tadpoles in ponds and even the lambs and puppies which have been born at home. I know lots of them have also developed keen gardening skills over the last two years (one positive thing to come out of the pandemic).

It would be lovely to share some photos of all these living things as they grow and develop. If you email them too me, we can share them.

Happy Easter

Mrs Bernasconi
