Revise all of your phase 3 flash cards and then keep working through the digraphs and trigraphs focusing on the ones that your child finds tricky to remember. Link to Mr Thorne does phonics.

Today we are going to be looking at the tricky words he, we and she. Display a caption containing the tricky word. Read the caption pointing to each word, then point to the tricky word and say it again. Write the tricky word on a separate piece of paper and sound talk it e.g he h-ee. Point to the tricky part of the word and explain that the letter doesn’t match the sound that we know e.g. the e in he is different to the e in hen. Repeat with other captions. Here are some examples for you:

She will fix the bucket at the well.

He did up the zip on Ben’s jacket.

We can get the big bed into the van.

Year 1 are going to be adding in captions to explain what is happening using time connectives. Here is a word mat to help them:

T-L-2410-Time-Conjunctives-word-Mat_ver_1

Reception can add a short description of what is happening. Reception children may only use 3 or 4 of the pictures to create their story map. If they want to use more they could select a couple to write about. Make sure they are planning their sentence and sounding out each word for spelling- it doesn’t have to be correct as long as it is phonetically decodeable! For example your child may only be able to hear a couple of sounds in crocodile.

Today’s activity is about comparing amounts.

Practical – Comparing amounts

Children will select two money cards. They will identify the total amount on each card then compare the amounts.

★☆☆ – Children will select two coin cards and complete the stem sentences using more / less than to compare the amounts.

★★☆ –  Children will select two coin cards and complete the stem sentences to compare the amounts using inequality signs.

★★★ – Children will select two coin cards and write sentences to compare the amounts using inequality signs.

To further extend this activity children could have a go at selecting multiple cards and ordering them from lowest to highest.

Challenge

We are continuing with our topic learning on journeys today.

Have a look at a world map and discuss the different continents, pointing to each one. Tell children that there are different countries within each continent and then see if your child can name the four countries that make up the UK- can they find them on a map? Discuss the different countries that your child, yourself or other family members have visited and identify them on a map. How did you get to that country? Can children discuss the best ways to get to a given country? Can they think about why certain ways of travelling would be better?

Reception

This week we are looking at fairy tales.

For today’s activity I would like children to come up with an alternative ending for Little Red Riding Hood. Read the story together but stop when Little Red Riding Hood works out that the wolf is in her Grandmother’s bed.

They can either write down their ending or act it out using toys/puppets.

Year 1

This week we are going to be writing our own story based on a fairy tale. We are going to build up to writing our story throughout the week so that children have a chance to develop their ideas. Read different fairy tales together and discuss who the characters are, where the stories are set and the main plot.

For today’s activity I would like you to think about what is going to happen in the beginning, middle and end of your story. You don’t need to write the story just some ideas of what you are going to include.

You might like to use this template to record you work:

Maths

Reception

We are continuing with capacity today. Today we are going to be estimating how many spoonfuls/cupfuls we think it will take to fill different containers. Depending on the containers you have you may want to use cups instead of spoons.

Record your findings in a table to show what the container is, how many spoons/cups you estimate and then the actual number of spoons/cups.

You could extend the learning by talking about halves e.g If it takes 10 cups to fill the saucepan how many will it take to fill it half full?

Year 1

We are looking at counting coins today. Start by putting a selection 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p in front of your child. Ask them to select a few different coins and find the total amount. Can children use their knowledge of counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s to help them?

You can then have a look through the slides for lesson 1 which looks at the different coins. It may be helpful to have some real coins available for your child to look at as well.

Year-1-PRESENTATION-Money-Week-9

There are two activities for today, the first is a coin rubbing activity:

Year 1 – PRACTICAL – Coin rubbing

The second is practising working out the total amount shown in coins and recognising that there may be more than one way to make the same amount. The sheets are coded for different difficulty levels:

Practical – Coin rubbing

Children will work practically selecting coins to create coin rubbings of the amounts shown. Developing children may work in partners for this activity.

★☆☆ -(Page 1 & 2) –  Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to matching equal amounts with values less than £1.

★★☆ -(Page 1 & 3) – Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to matching equal amounts with values over than £1.

★★★ -(Page 1 & 4) –  Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to finding equal amounts by drawing a different combination of coins than the coins shown.
