Half term

We have come to the end of a busy half term. The children have all worked hard, and we are pleased with the progress they are making.

Shropshire Bookfest has really stimulated our children to read for pleasure, and there is a buzz of excitement as the children discuss and recommend books to each other . Most of the children are now reading their  third or fourth book. Congratulations to Evan who has read all six books. The book spines are how many we have read!

Swimming lessons have been a great success this term. A big thank you to Carla Lane who has been supporting us; her group loved the survival skills  and swimming in their clothes. Congratulations to all our year 6 who can now swim 25 metres.

Voting took place on Thursday to select our class representatives for the school council – well done to Evan and Rosie. Our new digital leaders: Nina, Maisie, Poppy N, Eden Poppy B, Charlotte and Lucas are helping organise our equipment and support staff.

We wish you all a happy half term holiday and hope Storm Eunice doesn’t spoil your plans.

Science – Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Forces this half term.

On Tuesday, they investigated how gears, levers and pulleys  allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. It was a very “hands on” session which the children approached with great enthusiasm. They showed they could apply their maths when considering gear ratios too. The children took photographs and created their own Pic-collage records of their learning.

We clearly have many future engineers and scientists at Claverley!

Having the Courage to be a good friend

Good morning,

Today I want us to think about how it can be difficult to be a good friend. I am remembering our motto ‘To encourage one another and build each other up’ and sometimes that can be difficult. Think of a time when you have fallen out with your friend. You can share it with the class if you wish – sometimes it is better not to name them. How did you resolve it?

As part of our mission, we Take every opportunity to learn but we also Respect everyone. How can we be the best person we can and a good friend?

Enjoy watching this short video from Disney which shares some great friendship over the Disney years!  Have a think about what makes the characters such strong friends – what ingredients do they need to make their friendships work?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fORWRMMI9AM&t=37s

Did you spot some of your favourite Disney friendships?  And did you think about what made them such good friends?  If you could make your own character recipe – what ingredients would you put into the mix. Here are some ideas then have a chat in class and see what else you’d put into your Friendship mix…

  • A jar of kindness,
  • A spoonful of listening,
  • A can of honesty,
  • 1kg of forgiveness…..
  • …….over to you!

How many ingredients did you put into your friendship recipe? I’m sure there were loads as Friendship takes many forms – but I wonder what the one main ingredient is, that without, it might mean the friendship doesn’t last?…..Remember we might all have a different idea – but for me – I’d have to say ‘LOVE’ – as if we remember what God’s greatest commandment is – “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind” – I think God is telling us to simply love each other.

Let’s take a quiet moment of reflection – think about your friendship recipe – do you think you have all those ingredients?  Have you got any missing, and if so what can you do about it so that you can be the very best friend you can be?

Listen to this song about friendship and reflect on how we can be a better friend to others…

Dear God,

Thank you that we have our very special friends.

Help us always to follow your rules of friendship

and to think about our friends before we think about ourselves.

Help us to take care of each other just as you take care of us.

Amen.

Worship – Monday 14th February

Good morning,

Unique

Today, I want us to think about how we are all different and how great that is! Your teachers will have a Power Point to show you.

This is the story of Elmer which I would like you to watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UjmssSXfsc

Let’s see if we really can ‘encourage one another and build each other up’ this week as in the words of the song, ‘We are all Amazing’.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbHQ-OS9_G0

Dear God,

We thank you for the amazing, beautiful world you
created. Help us to care for it.
We thank you for the wonderful, unique people you have
made us to be. Help us to care for one another.

Amen

Safer Internet

Good morning all,

We are really thinking about looking after our mental health this week and we have been doing activities through the week to find ways to help ourselves.

Talking about internet safety is another way of making sure you have respectful relationships online.  Here are the Safer Internet assemblies – the link will take you to two options and your class teachers can choose the one for their class.

Tuesday 8th February – School Council assembly

Good morning everyone.

We want to improve the outside area and to do this we need your help! We need a school Council!

What is a school council?

A school council is a formal group of children who have been elected by other children in their school to represent them. They use their pupil voice to represent the views of the children within the school and to raise issues with their teachers at school council meetings.

A school council plays an important role within the school because they provide a way in which they can express your opinions and make a difference by suggesting a change or improvement.

Have a look a the Power Point which explains more.

If you wish to be on the school council, take one of the application forms at the end of the day and fill it in. The closing date for entries is Monday 14th February. Voting will take place by Wednesday 16th Feb. New school council will be announced on Thursday 17th February.

Here is a School Council song!

Assembly – Thursday 3rd Feb

Good morning everyone, the assembly today is all bout the Winter Olympics.

The first Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Tomorrow is the first day of the Winter Olympic Games which are being held in Beijing, China.

What events do you think are in the Winter Olympics? Find out more here and see how many events you can remember at the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPdKq-MXQlk

What did you find out? Can you remember some of the events?

The Olympics are a time when athletes come together and compete to win events. They try to be the best they can and more importantly, they are participating. Think about some of the activities you do and how some take more effort and hard work if you want to succeed. Can you share these with the class?

The 2022 Winter Olympics opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, February 4 and will start at 11:30am UK time. Some events will be held here at the Bird’s Nest stadium.

Bird's Nest, China

Have a think about how you can try to be your BEST. What will you work on to be better at over the coming weeks?

Dear God,

Thank you for giving us the opportunities to learn in school and at home.

Thank you for giving us the strength to be our best and not give up.

Help us to play well with others and in the spirit of good sportsmanship.

Help us to encourage one another and build each other up as we go through the day.

Amen.

Here is a song to finish!

Worship 1st Feb – Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year

Good morning,

Today you will be finding out about the Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year. What do you know about it?

Have you ever been to a celebration? What did it involve? Watch the following video clip and think about the differences between the Chinese New Year and New Year celebrations held on 31st December.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/assemblies-ks1-ks2-chinese-new-year-festivals-lunar-festival/zp993j6

Can you remember any of the traditions that you saw in the video?

Here is the story of how each of the animals got a year named after them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVClAj8q_lY

You could find out which animal you are.

Chinese New Year is all about starting afresh and hoping for good things in the future for you, your family and friends. Think of anything that brings you good luck, happiness and hope for the future.

Dear God,

Thank you for the lessons we can learn from Chinese New Year, about the importance of family, friends, community and happiness.

Help us to be hopeful for the future and to share happiness and hope all around us.

Amen
