Phonics

Online Letters and Sounds lessons.

Reception

Revise all of your phase 3 sound cards.

Watch Mr Thorne does phonics for your focus sound for today. In school we are focusing on recognising digraphs and trigraphs when reading and spelling so we are working through all of the phase three sounds again.

Today we are going to play countdown. Have a list of words with different phase 3 sounds in (some that your child is confident with and some tricky words) display the list so your child can see them. You will also need a timer to countdown. Children need to read as many words correctly as possible before the timer runs out.

Year 1

Revise all of your phase 5 sound cards.

Watch Mr Thorne does phonics for your focus sound for today. In school we are focusing on recognising digraphs and trigraphs when reading and spelling so we are working through all of the phase three sounds again.

Today we are going to look at adding ed to the end of words for the past tense.

Write these words on separate pieces of paper and put them in a bag.

rounded, helped, turned, begged, hissed, wanted, sorted, hummed, waded, washed, rocked, roasted

Pull one out at a time and without showing your child read the word out loud. Children then need to write the word on a piece of paper or whiteboard and show you.

Literacy

Reception

This week we are looking at fairy tales.

For today’s activity I would like you to look at Little Red Riding Hood again but today we are going to be re-telling the story. You could use characters that you have at home or you could make these puppets:

Puppets

Ask your child to use the characters/puppets to tell you about the story. See if they can build the setting using objects around the home, can they use different voices for the different characters? Can they add extra detail?

Year 1

This week we are going to be writing our own story based on a fairy tale. We are going to build up to writing our story throughout the week so that children have a chance to develop their ideas. Read different fairy tales together and discuss who the characters are, where the stories are set and the main plot.

For today’s activity I would like you to create the main characters for your story. There should only be 2 or 3. Draw a picture of your character and then use descriptive words to tell me about their personality and what they look like.

It may help to look at images of different characters or animals depending on who you choose.

Maths

Reception

We are continuing with capacity today. Give your child different sized containers and a small cup/ladle. Can they work out which container will hold the most by counting how many cups/ladles it takes to fill each of them up. Can they record their results? This can be however they want.

You could then have a look at the Year 1 White Rose material for capacity.

Look at the lesson 4 video.

Lesson-4-Measure-capacity-2019

Year-1-Week-6

Year 1

For today’s starter take it in turns to describe a coin, think about the colour, shape and size. You can say which coins it is bigger or smaller than.

Then have a look at the powerpoint for lesson 2 looking at different notes.

Today’s activity is all abut recognising notes, again the sheets are graded based on level of difficulty:

★☆☆ –  (Page 1 & 2) –  Children will identify the value of notes and calculate how many £5 notes make £10/£20 and how many £10 notes make £20. Children may count in 1s to help them do this.

★★☆ –  (Page 1 & 2) ) – Children will identify the value of notes and calculate how many £5 notes make £10/£20 and how many £10 notes make £20.

★★★ –  (Page 1 – 3) –  Children will identify the value of notes and calculate how many £5 notes make £10/£20 and how many £10 notes make £20. Children will progress to selecting which notes would make a given amount.

Year 1 – WORKSHEETS – Recognise notes

Children could then have a go at this activity where they need to match the written value to the coin/note.

Year 1 – ACTIVITY- Matching coins and notes

Challenge

We are continuing with our RE topic of looking after he world around us. Share the creation story together and then create your own piece of artwork showing each day. You could use paint, loose parts or make a collage.

Reception

Revise all of your phase 3 sound cards.

Watch Mr Thorne does phonics for your focus sound for today. In school we are focusing on recognising digraphs and trigraphs when reading and spelling so we are working through all of the phase three sounds again.

For today’s activity choose items around your home that include your focus sound. Talk about the object you have and plan a sentence to describe it e.g A blue coat. You can extend this by talking about capital letters and full stops or by adding more detail to your description e.g A blue coat with 4 gold buttons.

Then ask your child to record their sentence. The spelling does not have to be correct but should be phonetically decodable based on the sounds that your child knows e.g A blue coat with gold buttons could be written as A bloo coat with gold butns.

Year 1

Revise all of your phase 5 sound cards.

Watch Mr Thorne does phonics for your focus sound for today. In school we are focusing on recognising digraphs and trigraphs when reading and spelling so we are working through all of the phase three sounds again.

For today’s activity we are going to look at past tense. You could ask questions that relate to things you have actually done or they could be made up. Say to your child ‘Today I am eating an apple. What did I eat yesterday? Their response could be Yesterday you ate a sandwich. Then say to them, ‘Today I am jumping on the bed. Where did I jump yesterday? The response could be, Yesterday you jumped in the water. The answers could be silly such as jumping into a pile of jelly as long as the tense is correct.

Literacy

Reception

This week we are looking at fairy tales.

For today’s activity I would like you to look at Little Red Riding Hood. I have attached a story powerpoint or you could look at a book together. When you’ve finished the story talk about the main characters and the setting. Discuss the structure of the story by referring to the beginning, middle and end and what happened at each point. Then see if your child can sequence the story by looking at pictures.

Year 1

This week we are going to be writing our own story based on a fairy tale. We are going to build up to writing our story throughout the week so that children have a chance to develop their ideas. Read different fairy tales together and discuss who the characters are, where the stories are set and the main plot.

For today’s activity I would like you to create the setting for your story. You could draw a picture to help you but I would like to see lots of descriptive language to describe the setting. There may be more than one setting e.g. a forest and a castle.

It may help to look at images of fairy tale settings or of castles/cottages/forests to help develop your child’s ideas.

Maths

Reception

This week we are looking at capacity. Children should explore through play filling different containers and describing them by saying whether they are full, empty, half full, nearly full or nearly empty. They also be encouraged to use language to describe their containers such as tall, thin, narrow, wide, shallow.

Provide your child with a container and ask them to fill it to the different levels (full, half full etc). Can they find a container that holds more/ less than their container? Let your child explore filling containers of different sizes with water, sand, rice or cereal.

You could then have a go at the Year 1 White Rose material. Look at the video for lesson 3.

Year 1

This week we are going to look at money and today we are focusing on recognising coins.

Start your learning by playing this Coin game on top marks.

You can then have a look through the slides for lesson 1 which looks at the different coins. It may be helpful to have some real coins available for your child to look at as well.

Year-1-PRESENTATION-Money-Week-9

There are two activities for today, the first is a coin rubbing activity:

Year 1 – PRACTICAL – Coin rubbing

The second is practising working out the total amount shown in coins and recognising that there may be more than one way to make the same amount. The sheets are coded for different difficulty levels:

Practical – Coin rubbing

Children will work practically selecting coins to create coin rubbings of the amounts shown. Developing children may work in partners for this activity.

★☆☆ -(Page 1 & 2) –  Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to matching equal amounts with values less than £1.

★★☆ -(Page 1 & 3) – Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to matching equal amounts with values over than £1.

★★★ -(Page 1 & 4) –  Children will identify coins and sort them into groups based on their characteristics. They will progress to finding equal amounts by drawing a different combination of coins than the coins shown.

Year 1 – WORKSHEETS – Recognise coins

Challenge

We are continuing with our Science learning by growing our own seeds.

Start by looking at the different types of gardens in the picture pack.

KS1_Science_Yr_1_Summer_2_Whats_Growing_Session_3_Resource_1

For the activity we are going to grow a bean plant from a bean seed in a freezer bag. Page 12 of the pack above will talk you through how to do this. Show your child the resources and talk through what they need to do. Ask your child to predict what they think will happen to the bean. Give them the ‘bean in a bag diary’ sheet on page 13 and ask them to fill in the first section.

You may also like to watch this time lapse video of a bean growing.

Maths

Reception

We are continuing with weight today. A lot of the learning that takes place in reception is play based and exploratory and is about children using mathematical vocabulary naturally as they play. They should also be creating their own ideas to test out.

For today’s activity fill a bowl/bath/paddling pool with water and test out items that can sink or float. Encourage your child to predict what they think will float or sink and explain why. Can they use language related to weight such as lighter, heavier? A common misconception when learning about weight is that small objects are the lightest and large objects are the heaviest. Try and find items that are small but heavy and large but light to test out as well.

Why not have a go at this heavy and light activity afterwards:

Reception

From the feedback that I have received from the phonics assessments and from teaching in school this week I would recommend focusing on the digraphs (2 letters that make one sound) and trigraphs (three letters that make one sound). Particularly reading them in words and being able to identify them when segmenting for spelling.

Watch Mr Thorne does phonics for your chosen sound and then complete 5 spellings- 3 3 words that include today’s focus sound and 2 that contain the revision sound from your previous lesson.

I have also been using the Jolly Phonics songs to help with sound recognition, you can watch the video and join in with the actions.

To help with the writing section of phonics you can adapt the Miss Pullinger sound river game. Get children to sing the song, ‘Miss Pullinger, Miss Pullinger, can we cross your sound river?’ But then respond by saying ‘Only if you can spell…’ and give them a word containing phase three sounds. You can support them to segment the word and encourage them by asking what 2/3 letters make that sound if they are struggling.

Challenge

Our Science topic this term is growing and changes. This week we are looking at what’s growing in our gardens. You could watch this episode of Mr Tumble to get you started.

Show children a selection of vegetables/fruit that could be grown locally and encourage questions such as: What sort of plant does this grow on? Would this be an easy thing to grow? How much water do you think it would need? How long do you think it would take to grow? Ask your child to feel and smell the fruit and veg. Ask them to guess what they look like inside.

Then cut the vegetables/fruit open and discuss what you can see. Encourage your child to look closely at the inside of their fruit/veg (you could use a magnifying glass) and ask them to describe what they can see.  Think about:

Does it have hairs? Or little droplets of juice? Or bumps?

Can they draw a close up image of a piece of their fruit/veg? You might want to have a look at these images first.
