Keeping safe Online

During these strange times many of us are spending even more time online than usual. It has been incredibly useful and meant that we can still “see” loved ones who don’t live with us, work from home, learn from home and even have family quizz nights from home. (What would we have done if this had Lockdown had happened in the 1980’s or 1990’s?) However, we still need to be mindful of safety – it is easy for us to drop our guard when we depend so much on technology.

These resources are intended to support families and are not intended for children to access alone:

Wider opening of the school on Monday 1st June

The staff and governors have worked hard to ensure the preparations for the wider reopening of the school can begin in a phased approach on Monday. There is a lot of information on this page which I am hoping you will find useful.
Monday 1st June and Tuesday 2nd June
School open for: Key Worker children, Year 6 at 8.45am and Year 1 at 9.00am.
Wednesday 3rd June and Thursday 4th June
School open for: Key Worker children, Year 6 at 8.45am and Reception children at 9.15am.

Please note that as there is strict guidance on the number of the bubbles, you must inform the school by 3pm on the Wednesday of the previous week if you are planning on sending your child back to school.

Please don’t forget to put sun cream on your child before they come to school and provide a hat – thank you.

I hope you have had a chance to look at some of the information sent out yesterday too!

We are looking forward to seeing you.

Coming back to school

Hi All,

There is a lot of talk in the news and we have shared our plans for a return to school and in preparation, I thought some of these clips might help our children. It would be great if you could play them with your child and stop them when you want to discuss something. They might be usedful!

Half term message

Well Red class, it is the half term holiday next week – a full half term of home learning completed. Mrs Colin-Stokes, Mrs Richardson and Mrs Smillie and I all miss you. School really is not the same without all of you.

We will be welcoming Mrs Harper-Jones back after half term from her maternity leave. We have already spent time working together ( socially distanced of course) and she is really looking forward to meeting the delightful Red class of 2019-2020. We have Iots of home learning planned for you for after half term.

I will miss having you all to myself, but will still be involved with Red class as well as Blue, so you haven’t got rid of me yet! I have been delighted with the way you have all matured and worked hard together this year. You really support each other; you should be very proud of yourselves.

Keep learning and don’t forget that we are here to help and support you. We love receiving pictures of your writing and all your varied learning experiences outside and inside. Keep sending them to us.

Enjoy your half -term and keep safe.

Mrs Bernasconi

Phonics

Online Letters and Sounds Lesson.

Reception

Revise all of the phase 3 flash cards and then watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your focus sound for today.

We are going to practice writing words today. Select items from around the house that contain some of the phase 3 sounds. Ask your child to say the word and then segment it for each sound. Get them to write the word down, if they miss a letter (e.g. just write the letter ‘r’ for the ‘ar’ sound) then prompt them by saying the sound ‘ar’ and asking them what two letters make that sound.

Year 1

Revise all of the phase 5 flash cards and then watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your focus sound for today.

We are going to practice writing sentences today using words with the phase 5 and 6 sounds. Select items from around the house that contain some of the phase 5 and 6 sounds. Together come up with a sentence about the object e.g. The car is blue and has four round wheels. Say the sentence out loud and prompt your child to use a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. They could have a go at using question marks or exclamation marks where appropriate. If the select the incorrect sound e.g. oo instead of ue in blue, then ask them what other graphemes do you know that make the oo sound.

Literacy

For today’s activity we are going to be thinking about the author Julia Donaldson. Watch this video and think of questions that you would like to ask her. Year 1 have learnt about question marks and should use these in their work. Reception haven’t learnt about them but with modelling they can have a go.

Maths

Reception

Today we are going to be looking at patterns with odd and even numbers. Have a go at this workbook and see what your child notices about which numbers are odd and which are even.

For today’s activity we are going to be adding another page to the book. Can you think of another animal that the Highway Rat could meet on his journey? What could he take from them? Remember to include the Rat’s rhyme when he meets your animal.

To increase the challenge why not have a go at making your sentences rhyme like the author, Julia Donaldson, does.

Maths

Reception

Today are looking at odd and even numbers. Children will explore odd and even numbers using a tens frame. Give your child a number and ask them to build it on the tens frame.

Give them a few numbers to build and then ask them to separate their numbers into odd and even groups. You can link this back to our learning on doubles and halves by asking your child which group show us a double and a half?

Start with numbers to 10. Then work up to 20. Can your child guess whether a number will be odd or even before they build it on the tens frame? Can they explain their answer?

You could draw your own tens frames or download the template:

Reception

We are going to have a go today at sharing items between 3/4 groups using physical resources, again you could choose toys or items of food. Start by giving your child 4 items and say that we need to share these between 3 people (could be family members or teddy bears/dolls) so that you all have the same. See what your child does with the fourth item, do they try and give it to one person making their groups unequal or do they try to split the item into 3?

Increase the number if items and try splitting them into 4 equal groups. When using a higher amount of items can your child count in 2s to move the items into the different groups?

Year 1

Today we are revising finding a quarter. Look at both of these activity sheets from White Rose:

Reception

We have now learnt all of the phase 3 sounds! This week we will be covering letter names as well as working segmenting and blending for reading.

Continue to revise all of the phase 3 sounds to ensure retention and then join in with this alphabet song.

For today’s activity play Miss Pullinger’s alphabet river:

Write each letter of the alphabet on separate pieces of paper and lay them in a ‘river’. Stand on one side of the river and sing the song ‘ Miss Pullinger, Miss Pullinger, can we cross your alphabet river?’ Pick a letter and say the letter name to jump across. You could increase the challenge by writing a mix of capital and lower case letters.

Year 1

Revise all of the phase 5 flash cards and identify any sounds that your child has found tricky/hasn’t remembered. If there are multiple sounds select one to focus on today and work through the rest across the week. Watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your chosen sound.

For today’s activity play Buried Treasure by selecting the sound that you are focusing on today.

Literacy

This week we are going to be using the book ‘The Highway Rat’ by Julia Donaldson. If you don’t have the book you can watch this video of the story being read. The BBC have also done an adaptation that you may enjoy watching.

We are going to be using the resources from this Scholastic resource pack throughout the week:

the-highway-rat-5-7-home-learning-pack-a-wanted-rat-1950465

For today’s activity we are going to be working on comprehension of the story and the ability to discuss a story and join in with repeated phrases. Use the introduction section on page 2 to lead your discussions about the story and then complete the page 3 activity: return to owner.

Maths

Reception

This week we are going to be looking halving and sharing. We will begin by sharing into two equal groups and looking at fair and unfair sharing.

For today we are going to be using physical resources, you could choose toys or items of food. Start by giving your child 4 items and say that we need to share these between 2 people (could be you and your child or your child and a sibling) so that you both have the same. See if they can equally share the items into the two groups. Increase the number of items you give and then progress to giving your child an odd number of items. Can they share these equally? What could we do with the spare item? If it is a food item or something like playdough they may suggest breaking it apart to give each person half of the item.

Year 1

We are going to begin this week with revision of fractions before moving onto position and direction later in the week.

For today’s activity look at both of these workbooks on finding a half.

Y1 Summer Block 2 WO1 Find a half (1) 2020

Y1 Summer Block 2 WO2 Find a half (2) 2020

For an additional challenge I have attached some mastery maths challenge cards from the Year 2 curriculum. If your child has really grasped the concept of finding a half it may be worth having a look through these to deepen their understanding.
