Phonics

Online Letters and Sounds Lesson.

Reception

Revise all of the phase 3 flash cards and identify any sounds that your child has found tricky/hasn’t remembered. If there are multiple sounds select one to focus on today and work through the rest across the week. Watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your chosen sound.

Play Buried Treasure by selecting the sound that you are focusing on today. You can also select revise all if your child is confident with all phase 3 sounds.

Year 1

Revise all of the phase 5 flash cards and then watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your focus sound for today.

For today’s activity go on a hunt around the house and see what items you can find that have the same sound as your focus sound. Can you write them down in a list?

Literacy

Here are the links for the online version of the story and video if you don’t have the book at home:  video of the story being read. The BBC adaptation.

For today’s activity we are going to be writing a police report about the crimes of the Highway rat using page 4 of the resource pack:

the-highway-rat-5-7-home-learning-pack-a-wanted-rat-195046

Maths

Reception

We are going to have a go today at sharing items between 3/4 groups using physical resources, again you could choose toys or items of food. Start by giving your child 4 items and say that we need to share these between 3 people (could be family members or teddy bears/dolls) so that you all have the same. See what your child does with the fourth item, do they try and give it to one person making their groups unequal or do they try to split the item into 3?

Increase the number if items and try splitting them into 4 equal groups. When using a higher amount of items can your child count in 2s to move the items into the different groups?

Year 1

Today we are revising finding a quarter. Look at both of these activity sheets from White Rose:

Online Letters and Sounds lesson.

Reception

We have now learnt all of the phase 3 sounds! This week we will be covering letter names as well as working segmenting and blending for reading.

Continue to revise all of the phase 3 sounds to ensure retention and then join in with this alphabet song.

For today’s activity play Miss Pullinger’s alphabet river:

Write each letter of the alphabet on separate pieces of paper and lay them in a ‘river’. Stand on one side of the river and sing the song ‘ Miss Pullinger, Miss Pullinger, can we cross your alphabet river?’ Pick a letter and say the letter name to jump across. You could increase the challenge by writing a mix of capital and lower case letters.

Year 1

Revise all of the phase 5 flash cards and identify any sounds that your child has found tricky/hasn’t remembered. If there are multiple sounds select one to focus on today and work through the rest across the week. Watch the Mr Thorne does phonics video for your chosen sound.

For today’s activity play Buried Treasure by selecting the sound that you are focusing on today.

Literacy

This week we are going to be using the book ‘The Highway Rat’ by Julia Donaldson. If you don’t have the book you can watch this video of the story being read. The BBC have also done an adaptation that you may enjoy watching.

We are going to be using the resources from this Scholastic resource pack throughout the week:

the-highway-rat-5-7-home-learning-pack-a-wanted-rat-1950465

For today’s activity we are going to be working on comprehension of the story and the ability to discuss a story and join in with repeated phrases. Use the introduction section on page 2 to lead your discussions about the story and then complete the page 3 activity: return to owner.

Maths

Reception

This week we are going to be looking halving and sharing. We will begin by sharing into two equal groups and looking at fair and unfair sharing.

For today we are going to be using physical resources, you could choose toys or items of food. Start by giving your child 4 items and say that we need to share these between 2 people (could be you and your child or your child and a sibling) so that you both have the same. See if they can equally share the items into the two groups. Increase the number of items you give and then progress to giving your child an odd number of items. Can they share these equally? What could we do with the spare item? If it is a food item or something like playdough they may suggest breaking it apart to give each person half of the item.

Year 1

We are going to begin this week with revision of fractions before moving onto position and direction later in the week.

For today’s activity look at both of these workbooks on finding a half.

Y1 Summer Block 2 WO1 Find a half (1) 2020

Y1 Summer Block 2 WO2 Find a half (2) 2020

For an additional challenge I have attached some mastery maths challenge cards from the Year 2 curriculum. If your child has really grasped the concept of finding a half it may be worth having a look through these to deepen their understanding.

Literacy

For today’s activity we are going to be writing pirate poems using the sentence starter ‘If I were a pirate…’

To start with you might want to think of a few things that pirates like to do, things they wear and things you associate with pirates. This will help you when you come to write your poem.

Here is my poem to get you started:

If I were a pirate I’d wear a black eye patch.

I’d have a pet parrot.

I’d sail the sea.

I’d hunt for treasure.

I’d say ahoy!

Year 1s try and include an exclamation mark in your work.

Literacy

For today’s literacy challenge I would like you to have a look at this picture.

What can you see in the picture? What are the people doing? How do you think they might be feeling?

Record your responses in sentences. Remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. If you find it difficult to remember these have a look at this video on BBC Supermovers.

Maths

Reception

Start today’s lesson by watching Numberblocks.

For today’s activity we are going to be finding one more and one less than a number to 20. To begin with write the numbers 11-20 on pieces of paper and turn them upside down. Turn one piece of paper over and ask your child what that number is, get them to write it in the middle of their page with an arrow either side e.g         <– 13 –>

To the left of the number children are going to write one less than their number and to the right they will write one more than their number.

To help your child you could use physical objects to make the number and then practice taking one away to find one less than or adding one to find one more than. You could also give them a number line to 20 and practice finding your number then jumping forwards/backwards to find one more/less.

To increase the challenge you can use a deck of cards and a hundred square. Turn over two cards to make a number- depending on how confident your child is with recognising numbers to 100 you could limit this so that the first digit is always a 2. Find that number on the hundred square and then find one more and one less than that number recording your answers as before.

Literacy

Carry on with your fact files on VE day. You could include labelled drawings to your fact file or drawings with captions.

Maths

Reception

To start today’s lesson count from 1 to 20 with your child but make a mistake when saying one of the numbers between 11 and 20- this could be missing a number, repeating a number or just mispronouncing it. See if your child notices and if they can correct you. If they don’t notice bring it to their attention. On the next time counting choose a number below 10 to make a mistake with to see if they can notice and correct you.

For today’s activity you will need up to 20 items. Give your child a selection of items and ask them to estimate how many there might be- they could record this in a table by drawing the item, then writing their estimate and then the actual amount. Then ask them to count how many there are, were they close? Reinforce that when we estimate we don’t need to be exactly right but sensible guesses are fantastic! Try again with another set of items- are there more or less than before?

The object of this game is to encourage your child to see that 18 is bigger/more than 12 for example. For this reason it is worth starting with a high number and then doing a low number so that your child can easily see the drop in items- their estimate should reflect this.
