Thoughtful Thursday – Garry’s assembly

Good morning everyone and today we have an assembly by Garry all about Candlemas.

Lots of you are doing some great things this week – maybe you could write a list of all the things you are grateful for. While these are difficult times, there are many things we are thankful for. Here is also another short mental health clip to watch too!

Dear God,

We thank you that you have made us stronger than we think.

We thank you that we are able to do and achieve far more than we think,

because you have made us in your image.

Thank you that you have promised us your help and wisdom and strength,

whenever we need it.

Amen.

Home learning – Friday 5th February – English

As this is the last week for our unit of work on ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and we finish it on Thursday, I have attached the first lesson for our new unit of work called ‘Exploring the Deep’ for you to have a look at on Friday. It is a reading unit and looks at analysing a non fiction text about creatures who live in the deep sea and asks you to create your own imaginative deep sea creature at the end of the unit which should be fun!

Please do not watch any of the other videos in this unit as we will look at these next week.

Mrs Colin-Stokes’s groups – w/b 1st February

Hello everyone! I’m so glad it is February… the days are starting to get longer and there are snowdrops in the garden and the daffodils are starting to grow. It also means we’re getting closer to getting back together in school. I can’t wait to see you all again! Here is this week’s work but as ever, only do what you can. It’s been fabulous hearing from some of you this week about the work (and other fun things!) that you’ve been doing.

Phonics.

Our sounds this week are ft lf lk lp lt.

  1. At school we’d use our sand trays but as you’re at home you could make one by putting salt, sugar or flour onto a baking tray. Use this to write the sounds for this week.
  2. Log onto Purple Mash – English – Phonics – Phase 4 – cloze. This week’s sounds are in the pink and brown boxes.
  3. Can you think of any words that start with these sounds? I couldn’t think of any which is probably right as usually they are at the ends of words. Think of the words from yesterday’s Purple Mash games and write them out drawing boxes around the letters to help you remember whether the words contain letters that sit on the line, reach high to near the next line or hang under the line. Someone you live with could draw some boxes and you could try to guess the word if you want to make it more of a game.
  4. For our handwriting focus today write: help gulp tilt golf shelf milk belt felt melt silk draft gift soft. Try to join and keep letter sizes consistent.
  5. Play this game against someone you live with – try to make up the longest sentence you can using as many of this week’s words as possible. I wonder who did the longest sentence with the most words in?

Numeracy.

The focus this week is addition to 20. You’ll need to remind yourself of the ‘bffs’ our number bonds to 10 first. If we know our bonds to 10 these help us add to make 20 eg) if our number is below 10 (let’s say 6) then we know that 6 and 4 are bffs so that will make 10. We then know we need to add another 10 to make 20 so our answer would be 14. However, if our starting number is over 10 (let’s say 12) we know 8 is the bff of 2 and we’re already over 10 as 12 is a teen number so to make 20 our answer would be 8.

  1. To work on gaining confidence in this skill, make a number line from 0 – 20 on a strip of paper, or if you’ve got a ruler at home you could use that (but only up to 20 not 30). Close your eyes and point to a number. Open your eyes and try to work out what you’d need to add to the number to make 20.
  2. When you’re getting confident cut up pieces of paper with 0-20 on and ask someone else to pick one out of a bag or pot and show it to you. You will then say the number that would need to be added to make 20. If you would rather, you could just use your number line and someone else could point to the start numbers.

Thank you to those of you who have sent us work to look at, we have really enjoyed seeing the work you have done at home. I have published the home learning tasks for this week and have posted extra activities for Children’s Mental Health week which is from 1st-7th February. I hope you enjoy completing some of those activities as they are something different to do.
