What is the Sports Premium?
The Government has provided funding of £150 million per annum since 2013 to ‘provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and sees money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
- New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
- Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
We believe that the breadth of our PE and school sports curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities provides opportunities for engagement and enjoyment which in turn have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of our children.
Here at Claverley C of E Primary School we recognise everyone as a child of God and through sharing this knowledge, we encourage all to grow in their learning so that everyone can achieve and flourish in all they do. We follow our vision where ‘we encourage one another and build each other up’. (1 Thessalonians). Through P.E. and engaging with physical activity, we aim to spark curiosity, value co-operation, encourage independence and develop problem solving skills that promote positive life-long healthy lifestyles, mindfulness and well-being.
We promote the school games values.
Determination – Persevere to achieve our best and be successful.
Passion – To inspire ourselves and others to reach our goals. Aspire for excellence.
Respect – For all and everything; for our learning, learning from each other and celebrating our differences.
Honesty – To take responsibility for our own actions and participate with fairness and positivity.
Self-Belief – Motivate and believe that we can all achieve.
Teamwork – Working together collaboratively and drawing on ourstrengths to achieve our aims.
Through these values, we promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in
2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
The Platinum award is the highest School Games Award available – with very few schools having being awarded this so far – and requires schools to have achieved the School Games Gold Award for the previous four consecutive years. This along with a school case study into how the impact of the school’s engagement with the evolution of the School Game is taken into consideration for the judgement before being awarded.
Great news!
PE and sport play a very important part in the life of Claverley CE Primary and at least two one hour sessions per week are dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people allowing them to express themselves outside the classroom.
The impact of participation in wider sporting opportunities cannot be underestimated. As well as the pride, confidence, self-esteem and skills which grow by taking part, there are also social skills such as getting on with others from a different school, meeting new people, being confident in a new environment and listening to instructions from different adults. As a small school, a significant amount of our grant goes into being part of a wider School Partnership so that our children can all participate in these opportunities. We may be a small school but through the partnership our children have access to a wide range of sports and competitions.
There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.
What is the School Games?
The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport, guided by 38 Sports formats designed by National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs).
The School Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, competition between schools, and competition at a county/area level:
Intra-school Competition (Level 1)
For many young people, sporting competition is first experienced through intra-house teams, form groups or in PE lessons. This level of competition builds on school’s existing work to offer pupils a year-round programme of regular intra-school competition in a number of sports.
Inter-school Competition (Level 2)
At this level, individuals and teams are selected to represent their school at inter-school competitions – regular local leagues and one off tournaments and events. Schools have the flexibility to decide which sports to enter, but are encouraged to involve as many pupils as possible by creating breadth in the sports they offer and depth through the creation of additional teams.
School Games Festival (Level 3)
Each county hosts a multi-sport showcase event as a culmination of the year-round inter-school competition. In Durham, this is delivered across a number of days as both a ‘winter’ and ‘summer’ festival. School teams competing at Level 2 win the opportunity to compete at the County festivals. Individuals succeeding at this level are encouraged to further develop their enjoyment and talent in sport through existing NGB club and talent pathways.
